Pollution Prevention and Pollution Prevention Planning

What is pollution prevention?
Pollution prevention is defined in the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 as: "The use of processes, practices, materials, products or energy that avoid or minimize the creation of pollutants and waste, and reduce over all risk to human health or the environment."

Simply put, pollution prevention (P2) is about looking at what causes waste and pollution in a particular situation and figuring out the best ways to minimize or prevent it from happening in the first place. Traditionally waste has been managed by looking at the "end of the pipe", through treating waste to make it less hazardous, installing equipment to control pollution, or sending waste to the landfill. P2 involves looking "up the pipe" where waste is generated to determine how to best eliminate or reduce it at the source. Pollution that isn't created doesn't have to be managed. It's just simpler and more economical.

What is Pollution Prevention Planning?
P2 planning is a process of examining current operations and developing a plan to eliminate or reduce pollution at the source. P2 planning can target the reduction of specific substances or can be applied to all aspects of a production process or facility.
